![]() ![]() At first, I thought this was some bullshit. Should I curse my shitty +0 cloak if he offers me a good group? Should I wait and only curse good gear? Should I start with Okawaru until I get some good loot and then switch to Ashenzari? Such interesting problems! Why is Crawl trying to make me hate all other RPGs?Īnd though I could go on, the last thing I'll mention is the out-of-depth monsters. DUNGEON CRAWL STONE SOUP FORUM HOW TOI think he's probably great, but it's not at all intuitive how to use his curses. Okawaru makes it rain artifacts? Makhleb gives me massive life on kill? Hepliaklqana gives me a permaminion? Some are all active abilities you need to train invocations for, others are all passive, and no two are remotely alike? Like, I tried Ashenzari. The we have the gods, which are just as diverse and interesting as the races. Not content to make races just different piles of base stats, maybe with different skills, Crawl hits you with an octopus that can wear 8 rings but no armor? A troll with regen, crazy HP, big-ass claws, and several missing armor slots? A Djinni that casts with HP and doesn't have to train spell schools but you can't choose your spells? A Demonspawn that gets a bunch of mutations? Gnolls that are automatically good at everything but not great an anything? Those are all so unique! Crawl puts all other RPGs to shame here. What an insanely diverse set of races this game has. That's cool by itself, but then you combine it with races that play around with the skill system like gnolls or djinni, tweak it with cross-training and training manuals, and man, what a deep mechanic you wind up with.Īnd on to races. Do I go all-in on one at a time or train weapon, armor and shields all together? I think probably one at a time, but I'm not at all sure and there's probably lots of ways that work. It's just a sea of possibilities and with the apparent move away from clear breakpoints, it's all a matter of taste and experimentation. Then there are just generally great game systems like the skill system. One time I had 2 resistance pips and regen by D3 and that felt pretty crazy. AND there's a whole race designed around them? So cool. If I find an early stack, 8 times out of 10 I'm running around from then on with 2 or 3 good ones and no bad ones. Conventional wisdom may suggest hoarding mutation potions until you get negatively mutated, but if I find 3 or 4 early potions? I'm drinking one because mutation roulette is FUN. On the subject of consumables, I also love the mutation system. Got a blade vs a hydra? Blunt tree beatdown. It's late game and you have tree, torment and cancellation? BOOM, everything but you is now half health and you don't have all your gear melded any more. It's early and you're surrounded and out of escape options? Gotta fight or die anyway, might as well be a tree. ![]() It's early game and you want to 1v1 a red monster? Tree beatdown. Why would I want to become a tree? SO MANY REASONS. You pick this thing up as a new player and make a confused face. It's a simple thing by Crawl standards, but I just love it: the tree potion. Ok, so what's interesting about Crawl? Where do I start? I know: I'll start with maybe my favorite consumable in the history of RPGs. I want to talk about why and also hear what you think is cool because I'm far from having tried even half the races or gods yet. I have a gaming PC, PS5 and Xbox and I'm exclusively playing a game with no sound in a damn web browser. So I'm back for the past month or so and now regret all of my past life decisions. I played a stretch years ago, mostly just big melee guys until I got 1 win and moved on. ![]()
